Myotherapy
Myotherapy can help treat acute or chronic muscle tension and associated pain. It can reduce muscle pain and tightness, improve flexibility, improve muscle strength and increase your range of movement.
Myotherapy can also help reduce oedema (swelling), increase circulation within your lymphatic system, help with mental alertness and decrease anxiety.
Posture is also a large assessment with Myotherapy to help find and determine the cause of muscular issues and to help navigate the fascia in
the right direction and this helps with quicker healing of soft tissue injuries.
Myotherapy treats acute or chronic muscle tension and associated pain through a range of techniques including myofascial release, stretching, myofascial dry needling, electrical stimulation (tens), nutrition and exercise advise.
Myotherapy treatments can include:
Myofascial Dry Needling
Myofascial dry needling is a very effective way of helping with acute and chronic pain where trigger points may be active.
At Unity Massage & Myotherapy we can help deactivate trigger points using an acupuncture needle. This is not to be confused with acupuncture, which is a quite different treatment.
This is one of many modalities that may be used within a treatment to help deactivate these points. Please note, that if you do not like the idea of dry needling we can assure you that we will not perform this treatment on you.
Electrical Stimulation – TENS
TENS therapy is a low-voltage electrical current from a battery-powered machine about the size of a poc
ket radio that is used for pain relief.
2 to 4 electrode pads are placed on the skin in the area
where pain is presenting or around the trigger point, creating a circuit of electrical impulses that travels along nerve fibres.
This helps stimulates the nerves in an affected area and sends signals to the brain that block normal pain signals. This can also help stimulate the nerves to produce natural pain killers called endorphins, which can block the perception of pain.
Nutrition and Exercise Prescription
As part of your treatment, we might recommend nutritional advice, and exercises to help target muscles that will improve posture and prevent injury.
Performed regularly such exercises help reactivate and strengthen muscles, re-establishing muscle integrity and targeting the cause of the condition, be it lower back pain, neck pain, vertigo or something else. These exercises may vary from five to 30 minutes per day depending on the condition.
